Setup HyperSpin MAME and Hyperlaunch – The Full Guide
I rarely start a blog by referring to another one, but if you have not take a few min and read through our “Build a Home Arcade Machine” post. It will give you the high level overview of everything involved in building a home arcade, both from a hardware and software perspective. Setup HyperSpin MAME and Hyperlaunch – The Full Guide is designed for noobs to individuals with intermediate knowledge of setting up a home arcade machine.
Here is a video walk through of HyperSpin
This blog is specifically designed to find, install, and configure HyperSpin, Hyperlaunch (rocket launcher), and Mame. Also keep in mind that HyperSpin is only supported in Windows/Android, but this entire guide assumes you are using a Windows pc. Note: You will see some people selling “HyperSpin Drives” they say are ready to go… They will save you the hassle of finding and collection emulators, roms, and artwork files, but you will still need to configure everything which is the most time consuming part. Also if you need to troubleshoot anything you will have no idea what to do. I strongly suggest building it yourself. This guide walks you through everything step by step so if you have issues later you will be able to quickly identify and remedy. It is fairly easy to download the games, artwork, etc in bulk. If you have a “hyperspin drive”, then you can use this guide to get everything setup and working.

Definitions (The build a home arcade machine post above goes into greater detail)
- HyperSpin – The frontend pretty arcade interface you look at when selecting systems and games
- HyperLaunch (Rocket Launcher) – The work horse in the back ground that will launch the system and the game based on what you select in HyperSpin – Note: It is now called “Rocket Launcher” so in this guide those terms are interchangeable.
- MAME/Emulator – Software that makes your computer think it is the arcade machine or console system
- Rom file – Is the specific arcade or console game cartridge/cd

Get the Setup Files
To get started here are the download files you will need. You will need to create free accounts at both HyperSpin and Hyperlaunch to gain access to the download files. Do not install or open anything yet, just get it all downloaded.
Get MAME here. I am using a 64-bit Windows.
Get HyperSpin here. Get both the main install and then whatever upgrade is available based on the latest date published.
Get HyperLaunch (RocketLauncher) here. (archive password if you are asked is “www.rlauncher.com” without quotes)
Start Installing Files
Let’s start with HyperSpin since all files, etc will be placed in this master folder. You will probably want to put it on the root of the drive you are going to be putting a majority of the install on for example c:\HyperSpin or d:\HyperSpin etc. I chose to put it on my root of C:\ drive. Make sure and call the folder HyperSpin.
You will end up with this…
Do the same thing to the HyperSpin folder with the most updated version of HyperSpin and overwrite any files it asks you to.
Next we will install RocketLauncher by extracting it into a folder you create called RocketLauncher. Since I did mine on C at C:\RocketLauncher I will extract into a folder I created called RocketLauncher (archive password if you are asked is “www.rlauncher.com” without quotes) DO Not install it into your HyperSpin folder as it will cause issues
We will put mame in our HyperSpin\Emulator\MAME folder. NOTE: You will need to create a folder called MAME in your HyperSpin\Emulator folder.
The MAME installer is a self extracting archive, so double click it and extract to that newly created folder.
You will end up with all the MAME files in that folder
Getting Roms or Game Files
Before we add MAME to HyperLaunch so we can launch games in HyperSpin, I want to make sure you have your ROMs folder setup or created. You need to create a folder on your hard drive where you will keep game roms for all systems. Keep in mind you will need a bit of space especially if you want to do more modern systems like PS1, PS2, DreamCast, etc.
So again, create a “roms” folder on that drive and inside create another folder called “MAME”. Put your arcade MAME roms in that folder. They will be in zip or 7z and chd format. Do not unzip them.
If you need to get the rom files they are all over the internet. We do not host them here, but you may want to understand the term torrent and how to get them. We have a full guide on bit torrent protocol here. The best public site I know of you can access here. You will want to get both the roms and chd MAME merged titled like “[FREE] MAME 0.188 CHDs (merged)” and [FREE] MAME 0.188 ROMs (merged). For this writing .188 is the latest version, you will get the newest version of both the emulator and rom/chd files.
So have your roms and mame folders created with the roms in it as the picture above.
RocketLauncher and MAME Setup
We will now get to where RocketLauncher can “launch” or start your mame games. Open RocketLauncherUI in the folder C:\HyperSpin\RockerLauncher\RocketLauncherUI. Keep in mind we are opening the “UI” not the rlauncher.exe so make sure you have the correct folder. If it tells you there are updates go ahead (click check updates at bottom) and apply them using the built in auto updater.
We need to add HyperSpin as the Default frontend so it can pull in the settings from HyperSpin. In RocketLauncherUI click the RocketLauncherUI tab at the top. Add a frontend with the green plus sign and do not forget to save with the picture of the disk. See pic below for settings.
Once you have added HyperSpin, highlight it then press the red circle to set it as default. You will see some systems load on the left. Then press the folder icon with the pin to set HyperSpin as the default system.
We need to set some general setting so RocketLauncher uses the correct hyperspin locations and default settings. Under the “General Settings” tab, Rocket Launcher Tab, Base Settings select HyperSpin from the drop down for the Default Plug in. Next click the eye glass under paths “Default Frontend Path” and select your hyperspin.exe file.
Congrats. You have linked RocketLauncher with HyperSpin. We now need to add MAME location information to RocketLauncher.
-
-
- Click on Global on the far left (under systems)
- Then go to the emulator tab
- Click the green plus arrow and fill out the information for your MAME, then press the disk save button. My settings are below:
-
Now click on the MAME system on the far left, then emulators tab. You will need to set your ROM path to your MAME roms folder and then a default emulator by pressing the magnifying glass and selecting the global “MAME” emulator we just created.
RocketLauncher now has the details it needs to play games in MAME. With MAME still highlighted Select the games tab at the top and then hit the blue arrow. This will bounce your rom collection off of the MAME games database in HyperSpin which is located in C:\HyperSpin\Databases\MAME.xml. It was created when you extracted HyperSpin.
The green are games found against the master list and the red are ones in which you do not have roms. In most cases you will have the correct version and the red will hopefully be all the clones available for the games that junk up your HyperSpin wheel in my opinion. I like having the original game only.
Test your setup by selecting a game in green and pressing the red rocket ship to launch it.
Success (I hope)! It should have launched the game. Press the left then right keys on your keyboard to accept and go into the game.
We will go through setting up controls later, but I know you want to play.
Here are the default keyboard buttons for many games:
-
-
- 5 – Insert Coin
- 1 – Start
- Arrows – Move
- Ctrl – Action Button 1
- Alt – Action Button 2
- Space – Action Button 3
- Mouse – Analog Control (needed for some games)
- P – Pause
- ESC – Quit MAME
- F2 – Service Mode
- Tab – MAME Options Menu
-
You can press the “tab” key on your keyboard and configure controls. Also check out our guide on configuring your controls in HyperSpin using joytokey!
MAME ini file
You will want to configure specific MAME settings well as define to MAME where the rom files are located. We will use this info later so HyperSpin does not have games visible that you do not have rom files which will junk up your wheel. You need to generate a MAME.ini or settings file to do this.
-
-
- Open a CMD prompt (hit start and search for “CMD” without quotes and press enter)
- type “cd\” and press enter
- now the location of your mame file by “cd HyperSpin\Emulators\MAME” press enter
- now type “mame64 -cc” press enter you will need a space between 4 and -cc
-
Open the newly created MAME.ini file with notepad in the C:\HyperSpin\Emulators\MAME folder
You can put the path to your roms for now and save the file back. Again, this is the file you can use later to make changes to your MAME setup if needs be.
Getting HyperSpin to use RocketLauncher
We need to let HyperSpin know we are going to use RocketLauncher to launch games. For the upgraded 1.4 hyperspin or higher we will simply change some settings text.
Open your HyperSpin\Settings\Settings.ini file and set the path were you installed RocketLauncher. Example Hyperlaunch_Path=C:\RocketLauncher\RocketLauncher.exe This way when we select “HyperLaunch” (the old way to launch games) in a few min, it will actually use rocketlauncher.
Configuring HyperSpin via HyperHQ
We need to make a couple configuration changes in HyperHQ which is the program designed to control HyperSpin. It is a green icon in your C:\HyperSpin folder.
By default HyperSpin will not launch in full screen. Go to Main Settings – Screen tab and select full screen.
Now we need to put in some MAME settings.
-
-
- Go to Wheel Setting tab and select MAME from the drop down
- Set Execution to Hyperlaunch (this will use RocketLauncher)
- Hit the folder next to executable and locate your MAME64.exe file
- Now put in the rom path to your MAME roms
- Add the extensions of your rom files and put a comma in between, example “zip,7z” without the quotes
- Close the program
-
We can also tell HyperSpin to only show MAME games in which we have roms in our roms folder. Otherwise you will see the entire list of games including ones you do not have. With MAME system still selected hit the “Navagation/Themes” tab and check the “roms only” box.
HyperSpin Artwork and Finishing up
You now have everything to play HyperSpin. It will not be pretty, but it will play. Go ahead and test HyperSpin by launching it. The executable is in the HyperSpin folder (red icon).
Go into your MAME wheel and launch a game. You will notice you do not have any artwork, but everything should work as expected.
The esc key will get you out of HyperSpin.
Artwork and Game Preview Videos
So now you will want artwork to get the full benefit of HyperSpin. I am a “software” for free kind of guy, but you have a decision to make here. Getting the artwork is huge pain in the ass for free. if you spend some $, getting artwork and videos is automated for all systems you add to HyperSpin.
Free long way
I am going to give you the $.02 tour on the free way before you decide to spend some money and have it automate.
-
-
- You need to download each game artwork theme from here one by one and place in your C:\HyperSpin\Media\MAME\Themes folder
-
-
-
- You can get the low quality video snaps from Emumovies website here. You will put them in your video folder located at C:\HyperSpin\Media\MAME\Video
-
As you do this game artwork will show up in HyperSpin.
Automated way – There is a program called HyperSync that will automatically add higher quality videos and all the game themes etc. You will need Platinum membership ($45 for lifetime) at HyperSpin-fe.com and paid membership at Emumovies ($30 for 1 year then $20 per year or $65 lifetime). So you are in for around $75 which is a lot for software, but in my opinion it is total worth it just so you can set it and forget it. Also, contributing to both companies for all they provide I believe is reasonable.
Once you upgrade at both sites then you can open HyperSync located in the C:\HyperSpin\HyperSync Cloud folder.
Click the picture of the bathroom man and enter your credentials for both sites and okay.
Press the picture of the arcade then select MAME and yes you want to set it up.
-
-
- Select update database in the bottom left
- Select “default all” settings under each of the three tabs System, video, and Main Menu
- Very important to press the “set” button next to assigned to MAME at the top.
-
When you pressed update database you should see the games listed. Make sure and turn on box artwork etc.
Close it out.
Next click the Sync tab and select MAME and all media.
Press Begin Sync and get a beer or coffee. It will do everything for you.
You will now notice all the artwork and videos are in place when you launch HyperSpin!
Cleaning Up HyperSpin Systems Wheel
You will notice by default HyperSpin has many more systems than just MAME. I am going to show you how to clean it up if you wish. Keep in mind you can follow this guide over and over with other emulators and systems to add everything to your HyperSpin install.
Go into HyperHQ again and click Main Menu Wizard tab, then remove item from Main Menu
You can just remove from the database so it simply will not show up.
Conclusion
So this probably took you a few hours, much less than it did my first time, and much less than it did for me to write this up. It is somewhat involved and I have not seen a seamless guide putting together all of the pieces so hence this one. You should be able to use the same principals above for each emulator as you setup all the systems. [Tweet “Setup HyperSpin and MAME”]

FINALLY!!! Someone who puts it in a nice order! Thank you so much! I have seen so many written tutorial (no pics), YouTube Videos, and all they do is jump around leaving me with a mess.
Thank you for the kind feedback. I felt the same way that there are tons of guides, but they assume you already know how it all fits together. Glad it helped you!
fter weeks of struggling it took me 5 minutes with your guide to set up my Mame Hyperspin, thank you ever so much, cant wait to do the rest of the emulators, you put the fun back into , Very Grateful in Philadelphia PA
Enjoy the system. It is an awesome setup!
Hey man,
Thanks for the tutorial, really helped me out big time. Just having an issue now though, i have V sync turned on with HLSL and my games run 100% through MAME. But if i run them through Hyperspin they lag at 50%. What could be causing that to happen?? I have an i5, 4gb, and gt 730
Thanks again
Joe
Hmm. You shouldn’t have any lag with those specs. Does task manager tell you anything? See if something is hijacking your memory or cpu when HyperSpin is running.
hi, i have the same problem with kof xiii and street figther v, without hyperspin they run very well, on hyperspin they have frames lose
Thanks for this tut.
win of lot of time.
Hyperspin is now my front-end
Thanks a lot from Belgium
Now I need all the media files
Glad this helped you. Thank you!
Thank you Ryan for posting this. I was up all last night and got MAME to work, but I failed at getting other emulators to function. My 2 player joystick sets came in yesterday and they look great! You guys have SUPER FAST shipping! Thanks again.
I use joy2key to emulate keyboard strokes across all emulators. That is the next guide I plan to do in the next week or so. Glad you were satisfied with our products. Good luck with your project!
I’m good until I have to test a MAME game. Then I get the dreaded missing ROM or CHD files. What’s the workaround? Thanks for this guide btw. I’ve been sharing it with others.
Are you able to launch the game in HyperLaunchHQ with the red rocket ship (Launch) button? Is your issue just when you are in HyperSpin?
Hi. When testing with the rocket ship, the screen quickly flashes black & then kicks me back. Then I tested in just MAME & get the missing ROM or CHD file.
Do the logs in the HyperLaunch give you any clue? Also check that you do not have “roms only” selected in HyperHQ or any wheel filters for that matter on the MAME wheel as that would cause a similar issue potentially. Are you speakers connected (sounds weird), but I have seen that cause issues as well.
In MAME, make sure in your Mame.ini file your rompath is specified, then try a game that does not need a CHD file like sf2.
Haven’t checked logs- didn’t realize they were there for the checking. Right, I did the audit & I’m only looking at my ROMS for MAME. Speakers are connected.
Will MAME launch on it own if you simply double click the exe file? Hopefully we get this figured out!
Right. So I went to the folder w/ MAME & launched it by itself. A few games work, most don’t (missing ROM/CHD error).
Great article! One thing I’d like to add is that, if you use this tutorial for SNES or Genesis, etc. and you only have a handful of games, you do not want to press “Update Database” when you get to the Artwork section. At least in my experience, it wiped out my custom database, and added in the entire database for the selected system.
So when I synced up, it added all the SNES games and their artwork, videos, etc. instead of the for just the ones I had. I was able to fix this by completely deleted all those files, recreating my database for just the handful I had, then re-syncing. This then only grabbed the images, videos, etc for the games I had. It was a bit of a pain, so i wanted to give others a heads up.
Other than that, this process was silky smooth. I would recommend looking at this YouTube video for those wanting to add PC games.

OK… I broke my structure last night during a list refresh. Hyper-spin can be frustrating, as it gives you the ultimate power of change without a default. This guide is great, because I went back and followed each step until I restored my problem (Which I caused by not following directions). Hyper-spin will make you struggle for the first few weeks. If you are successful, you will be rewarded with the best front end out there. Now if I can just get through the “Exceeded the daily theme DL’s” problem, I will get some real progress made.
Thanks very much for this tutorial. I have been intimidated by the HyperSpin setup in the past, and as a pretty technical and mame familiar individual, that says a lot. As an adult learning and training professional, I must say your guide is very well written and easy to follow. Now I know for sure that this is the FE I want in my upcoming xtension arcade cabinet. My first upright. I’m stoked.
Still working through USB joypad issues with the HyperSpin menu. I believe I have set the options correctly in HyperHQ, but still no luck. I’ve read others have had issues here too and am attempting resolution. Any thoughts?
Once I get that tackled, it’s on to adding my nes emu.
Thanks again for the help. Really appreciated!
Hi Mike,
Your kudos is exactly why I put this guide together. It seemed to me everyone in forums acted like it was sooooooo straight forward and easy, it’s not IMO. I have been using HyperSpin for a few years now, but well remember the painful several month learning curve. The goal here is to shorten that for others.
The joypad setup is the next post I plan to do in the next week or so as the control bundles we sell show up as gamepads so it fits well with this theme. In short, joypads/gamepads do not play well with HyperSpin out of the box including XBox 360 controllers. Good thing is you can use programs like joytokey or xpadder to solve your issues and emulate keyboard presses. Both programs integrate nicely with Hyperlaunch. Again, setting it up is not to straight forward, but not too difficult (if you have done it before). Expect a guide like this for that issue really soon.
Good luck with your arcade and remember the stage your at is the 2nd best part (anticipating and building). Playing and showing it off is the 1st best. 🙂
Thanks,
Ryan
This guide has been the only one I followed almost without any problems. I had only one problem: when starting Hyperspin not find the file “\ Hyperspin \ HyperLaunch \ Module Extensions \ dxwnd \ dxwnd.ini”. Only I had to get into the “\ Hyperspin \ HyperLaunch \ Module Extensions \” path and rename the file “dxwnd (sample) .ini” a “dxwnd.ini”.
When do you have the setup guide for gamepad in Hyperspin?
It’s the only thing missing me for to have in fully functioning Hyperspin.
Glad the guide helped you… I have been traveling extensively, but plan to get the gamepad controls setup for this soon. Essentially you need to setup joytokey in hyperlaunch for HyperSpin, Hyperlaunch, and your emulators. In the global settings you will see something like 3rd party for controls. You select joytokey and put the path to the exe. Then in each emulator you setup under the “controls” tab your joytokey profile for that emulator. I will get a simple to follow guide up soon, but hopefully you get it done before then. After a while HyperSpin can become overwhelming because you are spending all your time fighting setup issues instead of playing and showing off your cab. Hence this guide.
Thanks!
Turn off the joysticks in hyperspin. That just causes issues. You need to get joytokey or xpadder setup to emulate keyboard presses. This will resolve your issue.
Hi, and thanks for the great guide. Followed all
step to the point where i fired up Hyperspin just
to test. Mame won´t start??? Tried various games but nothing happens.
What could be the problem? I´m running MAME 0.158.
Does MAME work outside of Hyperspin as standalone?
Yes. Weird thing is that i managed to start one game. Exit the program. Started up again and then none of the games worked. Not even the one started before.
Narrowed down the problem to HyperLaunch not exiting when hitting Esc. It´s still running in processes? How do i fix that?
Double check in HyperHQ under global on the left then the controls tab. What is your “Exit Emulator Key” set to? Fire up a game in MAME and press tab on your keyboard. Ensure esc is set for the exit function.
This guide is amazing. I am in the process of switching from GameEx to Hyperspin. I just couldn’t get use to GameEx. bought a lifetime membership with them and now it Is wasted money since I should have just bought one with Hyperspin. at the time though I thought it fits my needs oh well.
My question to you Ryan is something I have run into recently. you stated you use Joy2Key. I am using pinnacle profiler currently (use to use Xpadder but again I decided to switch recently. I have been searching and I can’t find a way to map 4 controllers to a keyboard. it would be easy for a nes or snes but when I am playing PS1 or PS2 and want to play a game that is 4 players I can’t seem to find a way to map all four controllers. any advice? Thank you
I would see if joytokey or go back to xpadder and see if they handle the 4 players more gracefully. I set up a 4 player with 44 buttons before without issue in joytokey. I would set it up and test instead of pinnacle.
do you have the layouts you used by chance or know of a place to get them? I am always accidentally mapping the same keys if I try to do more than 2 controllers.
also thanks for getting back to so many people
Maybe this will help.

How can I get all my MAME games to work through Hyperspin when I need multiple Mame Emulators?
I have games that work on one Mame Emu, but not another and Roms that are also vise verso.
I am not sure. You cannot get all the games to play nice in the normal mam64.exe? I would fix the underlying issue of having to use multiple emulators first, then have hyperlaunch only worry about launching the one emulator that plays everything.
Ryan, I want my structure to be 32 bit, so what is the best Main EMU to use and are their EMU add-ons to build up compatibility? Thanks for the help.
Can you not download the i686 from the MAME website?
Thanks so much for this guide, i went through a few tutorials and they were missing one step to populate the emulators under the Global list.
I couldnt figure it out but now i have,
Onwards and upwards,
Thanks again,
Ed
Glad you got it going. Enjoy.
Hi Ryan, just got your button kit love it but need some help setting up the buttons to work with hyperspin and for starts mame. I got it where I can move thru the games but the buttons dont do anything. I do have both xpadder and joy2key but lost how to get this going any walkthru’s?
In MAME just press the tab key and you can setup the joysticks/buttons. I have been traveling extensively but have some video already done for this just not cut up where it is usable yet. You only need joytokey or xpadder, not both. I use joytokey personally.
Do you have anything on how to get hyperspin and xbmc(kodi) to play together??
I do not yet, but will add that to the list. You can use my house of the dead guide. Just use the kodi.exe file in place of the windows house the dead games. https://gameroomsolutions.com/setup-dual-aimtrak-light-guns-pc-house-dead-1-2-3mame/
Ive got HS launching from Kodi using Advanced Launcher, seems to work well. Ive only testing it a couple times though. Im also going to setup Steam Big Picture to launch through Kodi using steam launcher.
I don’t know if anyone has already mentioned this or not but the Internet Archive’s “Internet Arcade” section, in addition to having web-based MAME also has torrent of Mame ROMs (actually the MESS/old school console ROMs torrent as well). It was a really fast torrent download for me but the Mame ROM package is ~42 gigs.
Hello Ryan,my name is Emi from Italy, your guide is really fantastic…
finally I was able to configure Hyperspin in the right way with MAME emulator..thanks so much
Only one question? How can I configure my joystick to control Hyperspin?
I have to download free software like JOYTOKEY or I can configure it using hyperspin settings?
thank you for your answer ….GREAT WORK…bye
You will want to use joy2key as hyperspin likes key strokes more than actual joystick inputs.
Dear Ryan,
I am a guy from Taiwan. I just want to thank you for your kindly sharing of this article. It is very helpful guide to setup hyperspin, thank you very much….
Glad it helped!
I’m a few days trying to configure the hyperspnin, the roms work normally in HG more when I open the hyperspnin the press start command does not work, can you tell me how to fix it, and by the way, nice tutorial, congratulations and continue to help, is a noble work
You probably need to use a program like joytokey and configure your gamepad to do keystrokes that hyperspin will under stand — Up, down, left, right, enter, etc.
Iam having the same problem it seems to be when I stop playing one game and go to the next Hyperlaunch still runs in the background I have to use crtl Alt Del and task manager to close the process manually then it will work
I have set ESC as a exit key in Hyperlaunch so Iam still looking for the automated way of exiting Hyperlaunch so the next game will run
What version on MAME are you running? I had a similar issue I think on verison .148.
Great to finaly see a simple guide
but why is it that Hyperspin always changes their homepage and or versions when there is a great guide so it is outdated a couple of months later
when i follow this guide i first have to fix the dxwnd problem
when that is done i can start one game if i am lucky
then HyperLaunch freezes
i have tryed for a little over a year now to find a decent guide
and i still dont have a working HyperSpin to put in my Cabinet 🙁
but to this date this is the simplest guide and it almost works
Thank you
Are you using windows 7?
I noticed my Hyperlaunch process does not close when Hyperspin closes. Each time I open Hyperspin, an additional Hyperlaunch process will start. I have found as many as 10 hyperlaunches stuck open in task manager. I must close them with the manager or reboot the computer or it will slow even my big i7 computer down. Any ideas?
where did u get the theme and video for that tab??
If you are talking about the older commercials for the systems, I got them from youtube. I will post them here.
Hi Ryan, I’ve a problem, I’m using 32 bit windows, and the mame emulator I use is mameUI32 so when I write mame64 -cc i’ve this error “mame64 -cc is not recognised as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file”, can you help me?
Does mame32 -cc work?
No, it doesen’t work, however I don’t know how but I just had the ini file. But now i’ve another problem, it seems that dons hyperspin list generator tool is no more supported..moreover when I press on the link you ‘ve posted for download i’ ve redirected to home page of hyperspin.fe even if I am a member and I don t know why..
HyperSpin just redid their website and it appears most of their links including a few I have tried on google are broken. Hopefully they will get it fixed soon. http://honerbrink.com/?page_id=14 is the link for Don’s tools
Ok, everything works good, thank you so much from Italy 🙂
Great! Enjoy it.
Hey, just wondering, what is the password for unzipping rocket launcher thanks
Hey, what’s the password for unzipping rocket launcher thanks
The archive password is “www.rlauncher.com” without the quotes. Updated the guide as well. Thanks!
Thanks Ryan for this awesome guide. It’s certainly a very comprehensive guide for HyperSpin newcomers such as myself. Setting up is relatively easy and straightforward thanks to your pictorial guide but may I add in some other information to date that are pertaining to the setup, particularly using RocketLauncher instead of HyperLaunch which it now replaces.
In case if you’re wondering, I’m setting up HyperSpin from scratch using HyperSpin 1.3.3 Full Installlation (459MB) and RocketLauncher v1.0 Full Installation.
If you’re following exactly my setup, you might have encountered the situation in MAME whereby pressing ‘Esc’ won’t kill the HyperLaunch.exe process when you setup your HyperHQ to us HyperLaunch. To solve it, you will have to do one additional step below.
I found that there is actually one configuration step missing, that is to setup the path for HyperLaunch. By default the HyperLaunch that came with the HyperSpin 1.3.3 Full Installation is the outdated HyperLaunch v2.2b. Unless you are using HyperLaunch and setting your HyperLaunch folder in C:\Hyperspin\HyperLaunch. You won’t have any problem. Otherwise, if you’re using RocketLauncher, you’ll have to modify the path to point to RockerLauncher instead of HyperLaunch.
To do that, open up Hyperspin\Settings\Settings.ini and look for the Hyperlaunch_path in the [Main] section and change it to your RocketLauncher path, as follows. Mine as located in G:\Hyperspin.
[Main]
Menu_Mode=multi
Single_Mode_Name=MAME
Enable_Exit_Menu=true
Enable_Exit=true
Exit_Default=yes
Exit_Action=exit
Version=1.0.0.0
Last_System=MAME
Hyperlaunch_Path=G:\Hyperspin\RocketLauncher\
P/S: I initially just copied and paste the entire RocketLauncher files into the HyperSpin root folder but found that it is messing things up. I even tried to create symlink for HyperLaunch.exe that points to RocketLauncher.exe but still, it requires putting all the RocketLauncher folders into the HyperSpin root folder. Changing the Hyperlaunch_Path in the Settings.ini is really the recommended way to go.
Hope this helps! I’ve also successfully integrating RetroArch with HyperSpin and will soon continue to work on PCSX2, Dolphin, and PSP Emulator 🙂
HyperSpin is definitely the best front-end for emulation.
Hey Ryan whats that app you used in xbmc to control it? Also do you have a video on how you setup xbmc i like the theme/skin your using.
Here is a good setup guide for aeon nox (skin) and Genesis (streaming addon) https://gameroomsolutions.com/kodi-xbmc-genesis-and-trakt-tv/. I use yatse on android to control my system https://gameroomsolutions.com/control-xbmc-from-your-mobile/.
Perfect thanks that helped I watched a couple of you otheres also but how do i change the wallpaper for each tab I like yours but mine just has the guy floating in space and i cant find where to change it at.
I should do a write up on this. Essentially find some images you want on google for the different headers. Push them on your box depending on what hardware you use. On your Kodi box go to system, appearance, skin (on the left/settings on the right), general, setup background images. From there you can use tv show or movie fan arts or select this pics you pulled from the web.
Aaah yes. This makes it all so much more manageable and it’s definitely the reason why I’m gonna buy me some memberships to pimp up my non-stylish hyperspin frontend. The other tutorials had me rather confused about the simplicity of hypersynch cloud and other aspects of this seemingly endless set-up. Seriously, thank you!
Glad this helped you out. Good luck with your project!
First off thanks for this guide. Trying to configure HS with Rocket Launcher to use as a FE to play about 100 of my favorite MAME games. I have downloaded HyperSpin 1.3.3 and RL. However every time I go to run Rocket Launcher I get the following error: RocketLauncher\RocketLaucherUI\Databases\Systems.x ml
Let me know thoughts thanks in advance.
You should be running HyperSpin and it will launch rocket launcher. Also, I do not know if the space in the x ml on your error is a cut and paste issue, but there should not be a space.
Ok got through my first issue. Now it appears when I try and run a game from rocketlauncher it just loads then the game does not open it takes me back to rocket launcher. I’m running version 1.0 of RL could that be the issue? I set the “Virtual Drive”=to FALSE, I see no such setting for DAemon Tools. Thanks
Nice job. Please, i can’t make work the psp emulator in hyperspin, can you do a guide to configuration of PPSSPP???
hi how do I make hyperspin run from power on iver tried putting the hyperspin icon in the start up and it jus loads up windows 7 with the icon on the taskbar ive also tried running hyperlaunch and with the paths for the game exe and rom paths it still says it cant find the hyperspin folder is there something im not doing?
Hi Andy, This guide should help you out. It takes more than just the startup folder to get there. Good Luck

C:\HyperSpin\HyperLaunch\HyperLaunchHQ. I dont have this dir within HyperLaunch have all other dir just not this one am i missing something pls
You need to download rocketlauncher (used to be hyperlaunch) and extract it to your HyperSpin folder http://www.rlauncher.com/forum/downloads.php?do=cat&id=2
thanks got it all working, only thing is cant get game list generator to work tells me i have no games. but can load and play from rocketlauncher
Where did you get v1.1.1.1 of HyperLaunchHQ? When I follow your link it is for RocketlauncherUI and that gets updated to 1.0.0.3. It visually matches your instructions more closely than tracking down a copy of HyperLaunchHQ 1.0.13.0.
Did I miss a step some place?
HyperLaunch was what Rocket Launcher was previously named. You want the latest version of Rocket Launcher.
The latest version of Rocketlauncher does not seem to have the file hyperLaunchHQ.exe.. I downloaded it twice now.. so was their a replacement for this file or a correction for this guide? Hey even a old version of rocketlauncher that has this file? Anything?
Same for me. No HyperlaunchHQ.
Hyperlaunch Hq has been replaced with Rocketlauncher. They work the same, just an updated name.
Does anyone have team viewer to help me fix my emulator projecting larger size then a small box
I can’t for the life of me get any games to show under MAME wheel. If I configure as a single wheel then games do show and I can run them. If I configure as multi-wheel then I get a blank list. I ideally want a multi wheel as I have several emulators I’d like to use. HELP !!
I’m having the same problem, can anyone help?
Are all the wheels blank or just mame?
Hi, I followed your instruction twice doing a fresh install of HyperSpin with RocketLauncher. When I select a system from the wheel it just keeps going back to the system wheel. No game wheel displays…what am I doing wrong.
Same problem here, have you solved it?
Great guide. Like others in these comments I was daunted by HyperSpin despite being very familiar with other front-ends. I finally just obtained a preconfigured setup but there are a number of emulators that don’t work and, since I don’t understand HyperSpin, it makes it very difficult to debug.
Thanks so much for the simple, easy-to-follow instructions!
10/10!
Your welcome. Glad it got you going.
HyperLaunchHQ is now under RocketLauncher/RocketLauncherUI
Thank you – this guide helped me to get Hyperspin up and running on my arcade cabinet in a couple of hours, which I consider quite an achievement with the added fuss of the ArcadeVGA card etc.
Glad it got you going fast. 2 hours is a huge achievement for HyperSpin.
Tremendous resource. Thanks so much for putting this together and sharing it. Well done!
Glad it helped you out!
Hi great Tutorial followed it to a Tee!
Only problem I am having is in the “Go into your MAME wheel and launch a game. You will notice you do not have any artwork, but everything should work as expected.” SECTION
When i try to launch a game from that MAME wheel i get a ” ERROR: UNKNOWN OPTION: MAME”
I am using mamegui64
THanks!
Use mame64.exe as hyperspin sends cmd line language to launch games. The gui versions will not work on how this guide is setup.
Hi … great site, thanks for the help. I’m still going through step by step and noticed that Don (of Don’s Hyperspin Tools) needs to pay GoDaddy and renew his site. I couldn’t find any alternate download sites … do you know of any … OR … an alternate tool I could use?
So the site for Don’s Hyperspin Tools is not active at the moment. Is there any way you could post the files here somewhere?
Simple google search worked for me
I had done that and looked in several places. Could only find an old version of it. It also just so happened that when I was searching, the Hyperspin site was also down because they were changing servers. It’s back online and has the latest version of the tools: http://www.hyperspin-fe.com/files/go/de674ccf1206370ed269bbe621182f60/dons-hyperspin-tools
Aside from that link, where else did you happen to find version 4 of the Hypertools download? Everything I found was either an outdated (read “not working”) version or just had a link back to the honerbrink site that, as of right now, is not active.
How do I setup NES in hyperspin,
I did the same from MAME but, did not work.
All work but the games, i can’t play nes game.

Hi Ryan, excellent guide and very useful. I have gone through this all and have hyperspin set up to just shows the games I have the ROM’s for. However, I can not launch any from Hyperspin itself. I know MAME is working as I can just run that seperately but can’t get them to launch from Hyperspin. Any ideas? Any help greatly appreciated….
Thanks for this
I have managed to get to the point where I’m testing mame in hyper spin but when I select a game to test, and I try to press button one on keyboard to start nothing happens.
Just as I thought it was all too hard… I found this gem of a tutorial !!!
Thankyou for taking the time to write it, I managed to get mame running smooth first time. Thanks again.
Thanks Jeff!
Hi Ryan,
First of, thanks for the guide.
Im having trouble initializing the games.
More specifically when I try to select a system, it will return to the system selection.
When I change to single wheel, I can see the games, but they wont run.
I’m using Win7 64b.

Hi Ryan,
Thanks for the guide 🙂
Im having a bit of trouble running HyperSpin.
When I open it, I can try selecting a system, but It will stay on the system select wheel.
If I change it for single system wheel, the games will show but I cant open them either…
I Have Win7 64b,
Can you help? pretty pls 🙂
Rocketlauncher doesn’t come with an HQ file. Has something changed in the last year?
Thanks a lot! I’m going to try this out when I have some time.
Great job.
Hi Ryan, I have yet to install, but just wanted to ask a question before hand please, my system has a 2tb internal hard drive and I have a 2tb external USB drive, can I put the rom files in the external drive with a pathway or does everything have to be on the same hard drive, and do you have to disable the anti-virus before installing hyper spin. Thank you Sue
You are fine putting your rom directory on another drive.
